TC3 is hosting an exciting workshop entitled
"Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research"
🗓️ April 22 - 23, 2025
⏰ 9 am - 4:30 pm
📍Chestnut Convention Centre @ the University of Toronto
Join TC3 for an Exciting Workshop on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research!
Co-led by senior TC3 fellows, Dr. Justin Matheson and Dr. Catharine Mielnik, this two-day event will bring together experts, researchers, and trainees to engage in meaningful conversations about the challenges and opportunities in fostering EDI in research and will spotlight the unique issues within cannabis and cannabinoid research. Through a dynamic program, we will explore how diverse perspectives can drive innovation and create more inclusive practices in cannabis and cannabinoid research studies.
Attendees will hear from an exceptional lineup of speakers and panelists sharing their cutting-edge research and personal insights. Topics will include cannabis use and harms among historically under-represented communities, health equity perspectives on cannabis legalization, and novel approaches to understanding diversity in responses to cannabinoids.
Speakers include:
-
Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, University of Toronto Mississauga
-
Liisa Galea, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
-
Christian Barborini, University of British Colombia
-
Leslie Buckley, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
-
Lakshmi Kotra, University Health Network

Maryam Sorkhou, University of Toronto and Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
-
Paulina Antwi, University of Toronto and Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
Plus Many More!
Panel discussions will feature voices from both trainees and senior scientists, offering a unique opportunity to explore the systemic barriers faced by individuals from diverse backgrounds in the world of academic research. Through these discussions, we aim to provide concrete strategies to improve diversity, accessibility, and inclusivity in the field.
Don’t miss this chance to engage with thought leaders and advocates working at the intersection of cannabis research and EDI!
Call for Talks - Closed
We are looking for speakers who would like to share new results or planned studies that relate to the theme of "EDI in Cannabis & Cannabinoid Research. Examples of relevant topics include but are not limited to:
-
cannabis use or harms among populations or communities historically under-represented in cannabis research (e.g., women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of colour; people with disabilities; sexual and gender minorities)
-
health equity perspectives on cannabis legalization
-
novel biomedical approaches to understanding equity-relevant diversity in responses to cannabinoids (e.g., animal models to examine sex or age differences in cannabinoid effects), etc.
Call for Trainee & PI/Scientist Panelists - Closed
If you are interested in serving as a panelist, please see below and reach out directly via email to Drs. Matheson (justin.matheson@camh.ca) and Mielnik(catharine.mielnik@utoronto.ca).
Trainee Panel Tentatively Titled “Barriers to Entering into Academic Science: Equity and Diversity Perspectives of Trainees”
We are looking for 4-5 trainee speakers (students and postdocs) from diverse* backgrounds to speak on our trainee panel. The goal is to hear from diverse trainees about specific challenges they’ve experienced related to their intersectional identities and lived experiences that reflect systemic and institutionalized inequities in academia. Examples include (but are certainly not limited to), systemic barriers related to:
-
culture (e.g., institutionalized norms about “appropriate” workplace behaviour)
-
language (e.g., challenges conducting and writing science in English)
-
racial-ethnic, gender, or sexual identity (e.g., norms about dress or physical appearance)
-
(dis)ability (e.g., lack of accessibility).
Scientist Panel Tentatively Titled “Barriers to Long-Term Careers in Academic Science: Equity and Diversity Perspectives of PIs”
We are looking for 4-5 PI/scientist speakers (i.e., individuals who have an independent research appointment at an academic institution) from diverse* backgrounds to speak on our PI/scientist panel. The goal is to hear from diverse academic scientists about specific challenges they’ve experienced related to their intersectional identities and lived experiences that reflect systemic and institutionalized inequities in academia. Examples include (but are certainly not limited to) systemic barriers related:
-
culture (e.g.,institutionalized norms about “appropriate” workplace behaviour)
-
language (e.g., challenges conducting and writing science in English)
-
racial-ethnic, gender, or sexual identity (e.g., norms about dress or physical appearance)
-
(dis)ability (e.g., lack of accessibility).
We look forward to your participation and insights in these important discussions!
